Sister Charlene Tedeschi

Sister Charlene was Athletic Director from 1983 to her untimely death in 1997.  She was a tough, no nonsense person who was also kind and loving; the kind of person who always looked on the bright side. She was a pioneer in Rhode Island high school girls’ sports.

No job was too big or too small. Sister Charlene was instrumental in establishing the Rhode Island Girls’ Diocese Basketball League and the Junior Varsity State Basketball tournament.  She was also the person who could be found helping at the scorer’s table and selling tickets at the door.

She was honored as Co-Athletic Director of the Year and recognized by the RI High School Girls Basketball Coaches Association and the state Board of Girls Basketball Officials for her service to girls’ sports.

For nearly 30 years Sister Charlene worked to give girls an opportunity to compete in sports. Few people in Rhode Island did more to help make that happen.

The playing fields and scoreboard at Bay View are named in her honor.

Eileen McSoley ‘40

In her first year as the Physical Education teacher at Bay View, Eileen started the basketball team and a swim club. The year was 1947.  Basketball practices were held at Our Lady of Loretto’s gym until the new Mercy Hall was constructed after the 1948 fire. No league existed at the time so the team played any school or CYO parish team that asked for a game. In the early years the Bay View basketball team enjoyed an undefeated season for three consecutive years.

During her 17 years at SMA Eileen also organized the cheerleaders into the “Pep Corp” that accompanied the basketball team to games. These young women won the State Cheerleading competition three times

Sister Margaret Murphy, RSM

Sister Margaret taught math and physics at Bay View from 1973 through 1996. Since 1972 she has been at every home basketball game and, until the past year, every away game. She has truly been Bay View’s biggest little basketball cheerleader!
