Mathematics is a science with practical applications in everyday life as well as a necessary instrument for the study of the other sciences.  The challenges of problem-solving and the understanding of the inherent structural beauty of mathematics contribute to the disciplined yet creative use of the mind.

Cognizant of the diverse abilities, interests and needs of our individual students, the department functions on the premise that every student, in order to be successful in today’s world, needs to be proficient with basic math facts and must be adept in reasoning, in problem-solving, and in communicating mathematics.  All students should have the same opportunities to learn the same mathematical curriculum.

• develop an understanding of mathematical processes, facts, and concepts;
• communicate mathematical ideas, processes, concepts, and solutions both orally and in writing;
• use algorithmic thinking as an essential part of problem-solving;
• use both graphing and scientific calculators and computers to enhance the understanding and application of mathematics, as well as know how and when to use the appropriate technology;
• recognize the power of reasoning as a persuasive tool;
• use mathematical concepts and processes to discover generalizations and applications;
• demonstrate her mathematical understanding through a variety of methods, including portfolios, discussions, presentations, and projects in addition to the traditional approach of written tests;
• use and extend the connections among mathematical topics;
• use and extend the connections between mathematics and other disciplines;
• use and extend the connections between mathematics and the world of work.
