Crew

Spring Schedule 2010

Bay View offers competitive Fall and Spring Crew for young women who look forward to the challenge of racing with top crews in New England and the Northeast.  We are the only Rhode Island High School that features an eight-oared rowing program.

Head of the Charles Regatta:  Thanks to our strong finish last year, Bay View has qualified for this year's regatta.  Come see us race in Cambridge on October 18th!  Google "Head of the Charles Regatta" for directions and race information.

Who May Join?
Students in grades 9-12. We need rowers and coxswains.  Rowers have good stamina, strength, and length.  Size, excellent fitness, and good technique in our rowers make a big difference in moving the boats.  Coxswains are small in size and weight, agile thinkers, and enjoy giving directions.  Our best coxswains steer well, show strong team spirit, and pay close attention to detail.

How Do I Join?  Students must submit the proper athletic forms before the season begins. Forms are available in the A. D.’s Office and on this website. You must know how to swim and have gained good experience in a beginner rowing program. This can be done at the Narragansett Boat Club in Providence, or through a special Bay View beginner program in the fall. We take no beginners in the Spring.

Practice:  After school from 3:15-5:30 PM Mondays-Fridays at the Narragansett Boat Club in Providence.  In the Fall:  Late August to the end of October.   In the Winter:  In the Wellness Center from January to mid-March; students who do not play a winter sport are encouraged to participate in an indoor conditioning program to advance their fitness and rowing technique.  In the Spring:  Back on the water in late March to the end of May.

Meets/Races:  In the Fall we travel to these Head of the River Races:   Meredith Bay Regatta, Head of the Merrimack, Head of the Housatonic, Head of the Charles and Head of the Fish. In the Spring we row in shorter, 1500m races: Shrewsbury High School, East Lyme High School, Farmington High School, Glastonbury High School, Stonington High School, Lincoln School, Southfield School, Lowell Invitational, the Mayor’s Cup Regatta (Providence) and the New England Interscholastic Rowing Association Championships on Lake Quinsigamond.

Expenses:  Students pay for lessons at the Narragansett Boat Club in Providence and/or for rowing with the Bay View Crew. Bay View pays for coaching, shell transport, and entry fees for rowing events.

Cost: Approximately $310 per season per rower/coxswain for Bay View Crew, plus costs related to practice clothing and travel.

Coach: Albin Moser and Mark LaBossiere
