New High School/Middle School Library text and photos by Karen Hanrahan, Director of Capital Campaign and Major Gifts When the high school cafeteria was moved to St. Joseph Hall in 2005 plans were made to move the high school/middle school library from the third floor of Mercy to the second floor space vacated by the cafeteria. Plans have been completed and the building permit obtained. The folks from Cornerstone Design/Build are in the process of making a new library happen. We will post the latest photos as demolition and construction, painting and installation of furniture take place. Visit this page often, as we expect to move in immediately after Christmas break! November 2, 2007 The lights come down as the ceiling is being prepared for removal |
| |
November 3, 2007 You can't see through all the dust but the ceiling is truly coming down. |
| |
November 5, 2007 The ceiling is down, and some walls, also. |
| |
November 6, 2007 The walls came tumbling down and renovation is ready to start. |
| |
November 13, 2007 Duct work for the heating and air conditiong is being installed this week. The ceiling will be open and have an "industrial" look to complement new furniture, carpeting and blinds. |
| |
November 26, 2007 The new library begins to take shape with the enclosure of duct work over the future circulation desk -- the boxed soffitt mirrors the shape of the circulation desk. |
| |
November 26, 2007 The data jacks for the computers are placed along the window wall. The computer desks will be located along the windows to add more floor space to the library. |
| |
November 28, 2007 The Old Cafeteria roof fan came down...talk about a relic! Most of the construction people on site have never seen a fan like this - it was installed when Mercy Hall was built in 1948/49. |
| |
November 28, 2007 The fan was trucked away to be sold for scrap - some of us thought it should be offered on E-Bay as a real antique! |
| |
November 28, 2007 The air conditioners were lifted up to the roof awaiting installation as part of the new library project. |
| |
December 5, 2007 Mrs. Gendron, Samantha, Sister Elizabeth, Ms. Andreozzi and Emily help to select paint colors to match the new furniture, carpet, and blinds for the library. This was the final of three sessions that narrowed selections to a handful of colors and then tested then with all the other elements that will be a part of the room. |

December 5, 2007 in the evening... The old doors were removed and prep work was done on the frames so new doors could be installed on Saturday. |
| |
December 6, 2007 Final prep work is done on the drywall so painting can begin next week.
Lighting is also being completed. |
| |
December 8, 2007 Saturday was a busy day in the new library. New electrical panels were installed in the BVTV Room that will service the library and the TV station. |
| |
Also on Saturday the lights over the circulation area were installed. |
| |
And the lighting in the main room was finished. |
| |
Also on Saturday... new entrance doors were put on. They are glass with the trim matching the windows in the room. What a great look! |
| |
Since it was Saturday, Lindsey Sanford'11, whose dad, Bob Sanford of Cornerstone Design/Build, is doing all the construction, came by to help supervise. Hard hat and all, we counted on Lindsey to keep all the guys in line and the project on time! |
| |
December 18, 2007 Painting of the new Library is almost done. The blue and gold - Bay View colors - is striking! |
| |
Construction is nearly done. Carpet is being laid and tile will be put in the workroom. |
| |
January 4, 2008 An entire semi load of cartoned furniture arrived today. This is a very small portion. |
| |
The installers assembled all the shelving, tables and computer desks and had to bolt the reference section to the wall. |
| |
Keeping the carpet clean was a trial with the uncrating of hundreds of boxes and lots of sawdust floating around. |
| |
Once the shelving was up the book supports had to be installed on each of the 480+ shelves. Katherine Gendron works through the pain to fit some of them in place. |
| |
Mrs. Margaret Cummings' English class helped move the fiction section by forming a book chain from the old library on the third floor of Mercy Hall to the new library on the second floor. |
| |
Matt Gendron helps to shelve the non-fiction books. It's a major task to get all the books in place but we're seeing the light at the end of the tunnel -- thanks to some great Bay View students and teachers! |
